The Frederick National Laboratory is operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

This is a temporary, part-time position working up to 19 hours per week. The initial appointment is expected to be for a limited duration, with the possibility of extension based on program needs and continued funding.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The Frederick National Laboratory is dedicated to improving human health through the discovery and innovation in the biomedical sciences, focusing on cancer, AIDS and emerging infectious diseases. With leading science and technology, the laboratory performs basic research and supports clinical trials and drug development. Frederick National Laboratory develops and applies next-generation technologies to solve applied problems, while also serving as a national resource of high-tech facilities and effectively responding to emerging health threats.
The Bioinformatics and Computational Science (BACS) Directorate works collaboratively and helps to fulfill the mission of Frederick National Laboratory in the areas of bioinformatics and computational science by developing and applying world-leading computing technologies to basic and applied biomedical research challenges, data science, supporting critical operations, developing and delivering national data resources, and utilizing leading-edge software.
The Advanced Biomedical and Computational Science (ABCS) group is a part of BACS and serves as a hub of translational scientists with expertise in machine learning applied to the interpretation of 2D and 3D biomedical images, clinical and genomics integration, computational chemistry, protein modeling, bioinformatic analysis of omics data, and other applications of computational and data science. ABCS develops state-of-the-art technologies in large-scale data modeling, analysis, and integration and supports the scientific research at the Frederick National Lab by helping translate scientific questions to technical solutions for cancer and biomedical research.
KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work independently to design, develop and evaluate solutions using artificial intelligence for scientific and operational needs with the Frederick National Lab.
Work on real-world applications of generative AI, automation and software engineering, helping to prototype and deploy tools that advance scientific understanding and improve operational efficiency.

BASIS QUALIFICATIONS
To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
Must be a current undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in areas related to life science, computer science, data science, or biomedical informatics.
No work experience required
Strong programming skills with experience in Python
Experience with the Unix/Linux environments, including command-line tools and shell scripting
Familiarity with AI/ML concepts, specifically large language models (LLMs), prompt-engineering and AI-assisted workflows
Experience in automation and developing workflows to improve efficiency
Ability to quickly learn and evaluate new AI tools, frameworks and technologies
Self-motivated and enthusiastic about exploring and learning new technologies
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work independently with minimal day-to-day supervision
Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:
Graduate students preferred with degree in computational sciences, or data sciences
Proven experience with application of machine learning / deep learning / LLMs
Experience with open-weight LLMs
Experience using high performance computing clusters
Knowledge of security and responsible AI practices
Previous project or research experience with software development

The salary range posted is a full-time equivalent salary and will vary depending on scheduled hours for part time positions
