Summary
The Manager, Lab Operations will direct, lead, and support all logistical operations of the lab, delivering high quality support services, and driving operational effectiveness. This position is primarily responsible for critical activities, including ordering supplies and stocking, inventory tracking, lab safety, maintaining the progress of purchase orders, and equipment maintenance and repair.
This is an on-site role (5 days per week) based in our San Diego, CA location.
Responsibilities
- Manage the day-to-day activities and organization within the laboratory, including effective operation of equipment, inventory management, and assisting with requisitioning for all members of the lab.
- Maintain and enforce compliance with all safety policies and regulations including:
- Biohazard management, including the oversight of proper disposal of all hazardous waste leaving the lab.
- Annual Environmental Health & Safety Inspection, as well as maintaining an up-to-date inventory and SDS/MSDS of all chemicals stored in the lab.
- Serving as the Biosafety and Fire Safety Coordinator for the lab.
- Manage sourcing, procuring, negotiating, and ordering lab reagents and equipment.
- Manage installation, repairs, troubleshooting, preventative maintenance scheduling, and working with technical vendors and service contracts.
- Manage lab inventories for consumables, storage and use-tracking for ordering, and organization.
- Welcome and train incoming lab team members on proper lab citizenship, technical areas, and complex processes as needed. Offboard lab members that leave the company in accordance with lab close-out policies.
- Collaborate with management to support budget activities, operations, and project management.
- Participate in laboratory meetings and planning sessions.
- Oversee layout, allocation, and tracking of space; manage logistics of laboratory move; implement plans for renovations of equipment and or/facilities in collaboration with facilities staff.
Experience and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Biological Sciences or a related field.
- 10 or more years of proven experience as a Lab Manager in the biotech or pharmaceutical industry.
- Strong understanding of laboratory safety procedures and regulations. Experience with EH&S programs and knowledge of OSHA standards. Demonstrated knowledge of lab safety issues, including biohazard, chemical hazard, and waste management.
- Experience working with finance departments to create and maintain purchase orders.
- Experience with inventory control and supply chain management.
- Experience with the operation of various lab equipment and automated instrumentation is required.
- Experience in managing stock rooms and scientific instrumentation.
- Knowledge of R&D processes, experimental procedures, and familiarity with the operation and repair of laboratory instrumentation such as liquid handling automation, refrigeration units, balances, plate readers, imagers, and dispensers.
- General knowledge of laboratory inventory and request database systems.
- Experience with negotiating and managing vendors, lab service contracts, and procurement of laboratory supplies, and equipment.
- Experience with project management, budgeting, forecasting, invoice management, accruals, and building vendor relationships is preferred.
- Knowledge and experience in managing facilities, operations, maintenance, space, and equipment administration in a research laboratory setting.

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate with all levels of management.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated ability to influence others without direct authority.
- Ability to establish and build cross-functional relationships and collaborations.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and relevant laboratory software.
The expected base pay range for this position is $130,000 - $175,000 plus bonus, equity, and comprehensive benefits. The base pay range reflects the target range for this position, but individual pay will be determined by additional factors such as job-related skills, experience and relevant education or training. This range may be modified in the future.
