Job Description

The Research Oncology Department at Gilead Sciences (Foster City, CA) is seeking an experienced and accomplished scientist-leader for the position of Director of Cell Biology. The successful candidate will guide internal research efforts and external partnerships, joining our team developing novel medicines for treating cancer, with a focus on creative approaches to identify, understand and target novel tumor cell dependencies. The candidate will play a key role in refining and implementing Gilead's oncology research strategy, including identifying research topics and therapeutic targets as well as developing new technologies. By partnering with our interdisciplinary research team, the candidate will access our state-of-the-art technologies and facilities to ambitiously advance impactful therapies into the clinic. Key Responsibilities
  • Drive creative discovery, translational, and reverse-translartional research aimed at identifying and advancing novel oncology therapeutics.
  • Mentor, lead and manage a team of highly productive Scientists and their reports.
  • Serve as a thought leader, including in refining and executing the Oncology Research Strategy.
  • Proactively ideate and develop and evaluate new technologies to accelerate early-stage discovery activities, enhance our understanding of disease mechanisms, or therapeutically manipulate tumor cell biology with novel targeting modalities.
  • Develop and maintain expertise in relevant scientific fields, with deep knowledge of the external landscape, including the scientific literature, conference proceedings, and competitive programs. As an in-house expert, propose creative and focused research plans to discover or validate novel targets.
  • Productively collaborate across functions on multiple projects, with experts in oncology, immune-oncology, protein engineering, chemistry, translational medicine, biomarkers and clinical development. Identify project risks and mitigate effectively, while communicating with project teams and leadership.
  • Think critically and creatively, emphasizing rapid data-driven decision making that balances risk-taking with rigorous go/no-go experiments to fuel a differentiated pre-clinical pipeline.
  • Contribute expertise to multi-disciplinary and externally facing teams to evaluate and recommend partnerships and acquisitions
  • Lead joint internal/external teams to discover novel therapeutics, understand mode of action and therapeutic potential of novel drug candidates
  • Proactively evaluate new technologies to accelerate early-stage discovery activities, enhance our understanding of disease mechanisms, or enable new therapeutic modalities.
  • Contribute to research reports, INDs, and patent filings and begin to establish an external presence through peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and external collaborations.


Knowledge, Experience and Skills
  • Ph.D. degree, postdoctoral training, and 8+ years of experience in tumor biology, drug discovery, target identification and technology development.
  • Strong knowledge base in cancer genomics and oncogenic signaling, with knowledge in immunotherapies also preferred.
  • Broad technical skillset of cutting-edge methods and models of cancer, in vitro and in vivo.
  • Demonstrated success in leading research teams to productive, creative, data-driven decisions as required to advance drug development projects.
  • Ability to identify and communicate key bottlenecks and risks that could impact the business while facilitating mitigations.
  • Team-centric mindset, with proven managerial excellence and ability to motivate skilled team members from diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.


The salary range for this position is: $221,170.00 - $286,220.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.
