Job Description

Job Title: Lead EHS Business Partner

Location: Cambridge, MA

About the role:

The primary role of the Lead EHS Business Partner is to support all EHS compliance and continuous improvement activities across the Cambridge R&D and Vaccines site. This includes supporting EHS functions within laboratories, mechanical spaces, manufacturing areas and offices. Maintaining EHS permits and licenses, performing required inspections and investigations, gathering and analyzing data for reports and EHS software management, providing and developing training, assembling metrics and supporting sustainability initiatives will be core responsibilities. The role requires significant EHS project and program ownership.

How you will contribute:
  • Lead and continuously improve EHS programs to ensure compliance with the latest regulations, best practices or corporate standards.

  • Interface with corporate EHS and Site Leadership Team, provide direction to other Takeda departments and continuously improve data integrity, and compile metrics for internal or corporate reporting.

  • Facilitate the Management of Change (MOC) process with Facilities, Lab Operations and other stakeholders to capture changes within the business, provide direction regarding environmental program and compliance requirements. Capture changes and impacts to current management systems and provide updates or changes as necessary.

  • Oversee EHS related third-party consultants and contractors, monitor key performance metrics with service providers.

  • Ensure that all EHS related incidents are reported and investigated to determine causes. Help establish and implement corrective actions and make recommendations for areas needing improvement. Track corrective actions to closure. Ability to lead complex investigations across the site.

  • Develop, deliver and manage EHS training to all personnel as required by regulations and by Takeda standards and procedures.

  • Lead internal and coordinate external audits/inspections related to the EHS program requirements for Takeda.

  • Gather and manage data related to the EHS programs working with other Takeda departments, consultants, and contractors; assemble and analyze data for reports to State or Federal Agencies, follow up on inquiries from Agency representatives.

  • Mentor and develop junior staff.

Complexity and Problem Solving

Ability to solve complex problems across different functions and work without appreciable direction. Exercises considerable latitude in determining objectives of assignments. May determine procedures and methods on new assignments. Ability to analyze data and forecast trends to determine state of future compliance.

  • Takeda employees at all levels.

  • Government bodies who regulate EH&S for the site (Mass DEP, OSHA, USEPA, DOT, DPH, Cambridge Fire Department, etc.).

  • Takeda suppliers and service providers to the site.

  • EHS professionals from other companies and industries for benchmarking and networking.

What you bring to Takeda:

Essential: 4-8 years experience in the EHS field, significant experience in the pharmaceutical industry, academic research laboratory operations, or other highly regulated industry; BS/BA in technical discipline such as engineering, safety, industrial hygiene, environmental studies, life science or similar field.

Preferred: Professional certification (CIH, CSP, CHMM, CBSP, RBP, individual ISO certification, or other relevant certifications); graduate level degree in a related field; expert implementing EHS management systems (ISO 14001/45001);

previous direct reports or direct Contractor/Consultant oversight.

Key Skills, Abilities, and Competencies

  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to EHS junior staff.

  • Familiar with ISO and OHSAS requirements.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to be resourceful and proactive to identify potential areas of non-compliance with business or facility changes and set expectations to achieve a future state of compliance.

  • Knowledgeable in local, state, and federal regulatory requirements as well as proposed regulatory or legislative changes at all levels.

  • Ability to work with all programs in Microsoft Office and software systems for EHS reporting.

Other Job Requirements

  • Position is on-site located in Cambridge, MA.

  • Ability to operate a car (valid driver’s license) and travel via air, rail or other means of passenger conveyance.

  • Travel to corporate EHS meetings, conferences, audits, etc. upon request.

  • Continuous professional development by attending EHS professional organization meetings whether local or out of state.

  • Candidate must be able to work in controlled environments requiring special gowning and wear of protective clothing over the head, face, hands, feet and body.

  • May involve occasional work in a cold, hot, high-noise, at heights, or wet environment.

  • Work may be required outside of the standard 8-hour workday including weekends. Position requires serving in a rotation as the EHS on-call representative for after hours emergencies.

  • Must be able to lift, push, pull and carry up to 25 lbs. and remain standing or walking for extended periods In the performance of site inspection and compliance activities.

  • In general, the position requires a combination of sedentary work and walking around observing conditions.

Important Considerations

At Takeda, our patients rely on us to deliver quality products. As a result, we must follow strict rules in our manufacturing facilities to ensure we are not endangering the quality of the product. In this role, you may:

  • May be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and other clean room garments daily. This may include safety shoes, safety glasses, aprons, face shields, lab coats, full body gowns, hair nets and gloves and hearing protection.

  • Need to remove all make-up, jewelry, contact lenses, nail polish and/or artificial fingernails while in the manufacturing environment.

  • Work in a cold, wet environment.

  • Work multiple shifts, including weekends, or be asked to work supplemental hours, as necessary.

  • Work around chemicals such as alcohol, acids, buffers and Celite that may require respiratory protection.

Takeda Compensation and Benefits Summary

U.S. Base Salary Range:

108,500.00 - 170,500.00

The estimated salary range reflects an anticipated range for this position. The actual base salary offered may depend on a variety of factors, including the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, specific and unique skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job.The actual base salary offered will be in accordance with state or local minimum wage requirements for the job location.

U.S. based employees may be eligible for short-term and/or long-termincentives. U.S.based employees may be eligible to participate in medical, dental, vision insurance, a 401(k) plan and company match, short-term and long-term disability coverage, basic life insurance, a tuition reimbursement program, paid volunteer time off, company holidays, and well-being benefits, among others.
