The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc.  The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research (FNLCR) is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. With more than 2,000 employees, the FNLCR is responsible for pursuing translational and applied biomedical research that is unique from academia, the pharmaceutical industry, or other federal contractors. The selected candidate will join the Information Technology Support (ITS) group, located in Frederick, Maryland.

The ITS group provides computer support, including operations, technical support services, and software development, to the Developmental Therapeutics Program (DTP) of the NCI Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis (DCTD). The ITS provides core services, including data acquisition within the laboratories, data analysis, and web publication of experimental results. Computer support is provided for many functions including: identifying and scheduling compounds to test, preparing and handling the compounds, performing the experiments, and analyzing experimental results for activity. System consultation and support to the various software developers and scientists who use the system are also provided.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and develop applications using the Java EE platform.
  • Perform object-oriented analysis and design using common design patterns.
  • Design and develop features and modules for mission-critical applications.
  • Contribute to all phases of the development lifecycle.
  • Write well designed and efficient code consistent with specifications.
  • Prepare and produce releases of software components.
  • Support continuous improvement by investigating alternatives and technologies.
  • Lead the implementation of API.
  • Identify risks and conduct mitigation action planning.
  • Manage Persistence using JPA entities and Bean Validation.
  • Implement business logic using EJBs.
  • Use Java Message Service API.
  • Implement SOAP Services using JAX-WS and JAXB APIs.
  • Create Java Web Applications using Servlets and JSPs.
  • Implement REST Services using JAX-RS API.
  • Create Java Applications using WebSockets.
  • Develop Web Applications using JSFs.
  • Use CDI Beans, concurrency API, and Batch API.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Possession of Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or four (4) years relevant experience in lieu of degree. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
  • In addition to the education requirement, a minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience.
  • Deep insight of Java and JEE internals such as memory management, transaction management, etc.
  • Experience in Spring, Spring Boot, and Hibernate.
  • Working knowledge of Relational Databases, SQL, and ORM technologies (JPA2, Hibernate).
  • Working knowledge of developing REST API.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Problem-solving attitude including an eagerness to learn new ideas, concepts, and technologies.
  • Ability to establish priorities.
  • Teamwork and willingness to listen to others.
  • Ability to work closely with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work self-directed and complete projects on time.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

    • JSP, jQuery, Ajax
    • Understand Java EE Architecture
  • Previously worked in a scientific environment.
  • Previously worked for/with the National Institute of Health (NIH).
  • Experience as an Intermediate/mid-level programmer.
