The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc.  The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

Program Description

The AIDS Monitoring Laboratory (AML) is part of the Clinical Services Program (CSP) within the Applied/Developmental Research Directorate (ADRD) at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research (FNLCR).  The AML is a state-of-the-art clinical research laboratory, which specializes in basic immunology and flow cytometry.  The primary mission of the AML is to perform sequential studies of immune function and phenotype in patients with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) disease or other emerging/re-emerging infectious diseases associated with immunologic dysfunction.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

The AML is recruiting for an Associate Scientist I to oversee the Research Flow Cytometry Section of the Laboratory.

  • Perform advanced multi-color flow cytometry and cell sorting experiments
  • Operate a BD-Biosciences LSRFortessa flow cytometer and a Sony LE-MA900 cell sorter
  • Utilize FCS Express Flow Cytometry Software to analyze flow cytometry data
  • Lead the development, optimization and implementation of flow cytometry protocols
  • Maintain thorough documentation of experimental procedures, results and data
  • Work with scientific investigators and collaborators to design experiments and evaluate and interpret results
  • Create publication-quality graphics for manuscripts
  • Stay current with technological advancements in flow cytometry and cell sorting
  • Manage all laboratory activities of staff, including hiring, training and direct supervision of staff
  • Process blood and body fluids from individuals with HIV or other emerging/re-emerging infectious diseases
  • Monitor laboratory equipment for optimum performance and perform basic instrument troubleshooting
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor

All work will be performed under Biosafety Level-2* conditions. Work may involve standing, walking, rapid mental/muscular coordination, good vision, working alone or closely with others. The use of personal protective equipment and strict adherence to safety protocols is required.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in a biological, chemical, or physical science with courses in biological science, chemistry, and mathematics from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or four (4) years relevant experience in lieu of degree.  Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency   
  • In addition to the education requirement, a minimum of eight (8) years of relevant experience
  • Working knowledge of Windows computer operating systems and proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • In depth knowledge of flow cytometry and cell sorting
  • Experience in evaluating and interpreting data generated from flow cytometry experiments
  • Experience with FCS Express Flow Cytometry Software
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
