Job Details
Vaxcyte is a clinical-stage vaccine innovation company engineering high-fidelity vaccines to protect humankind from the consequences of bacterial diseases, which have serious and costly health consequences when left unchecked. Working to eradicate or treat bacterial infections such as invasive pneumococcal disease, Group A Strep, periodontitis and Shigella is just the beginning. Our path to success is clear and well-defined, and Vaxcyte is set up to go the distance.
WHAT we do is every bit as important as HOW we do it! Our work together is guided by four enduring core values:
*RETHINK CONVENTION: We bring creative and intellectual diversity to every facet of the work we do in order to innovate and re-innovate the way vaccines are delivered.
*AIM HIGH: We embody our collectively audacious goal to courageously make the most complex biologics ever attempted to protect humankind.
*LEAD WITH HEART: Everyone leads at Vaxcyte with a kindness-first, inclusive approach to collaboration and vigorous debate that advances our business objectives.
*MODEL EXCELLENCE: The magnitude of our challenge requires our shared commitment to demonstrating integrity, accountability, equality and clarity across communications and decision making.
Summary:
Our manufacturing accounting process is deemed a critical accounting area that requires substantial focus and expertise. The Associate Director, Global Manufacturing Inventory Accounting will be responsible for all elements of our manufacturing accounting process. This individual will be responsible for designing and building the end-to-end processes for materials management, manufacturing costing, and inventory tracking and valuation (the “Inventory Stock ledger”) in an automated fashion, using an ERP. We are currently investing heavily in systems and infrastructure to support the increasing demands, complexity, and volume associated with implementing our clinical and commercial strategies. We are seeking a thoughtful and highly experienced individual, in this specialized area, to help guide us to the next generation of inventory tracking and costing. Will require one to be very hands on with the inherent details of stock ledger management in a diverse and complex global manufacturing ecosystem. We are looking for a candidate who is flexible and has a passion for innovation and improvement in processes and service delivery to our business partners.
In addition, the Associate Director, Global Manufacturing Inventory Accounting will have significant interaction with our business partners in Supply Chain, Sourcing, FP&A, P2P, and Enterprise Systems (business applications – IT) as well as our key CMO and 3PL business partners and our project teams, namely the ERP project. The success of this individual will depend on both a deep subject matter expertise of the topics at hand as well as the ability to work fluidly and effectively across multiple functions and roles. This role also allows for and will require creativity and the ability to “work backwards” from the “what things need to look like”. This individual will have strong input into the design of our processes of tomorrow, in a manner that will benefit our scaling organization by introducing automation and workflow methods that will drive future value for our team.
Essential Functions:
- Inventory and Costing subject matter expertise: this is a highly specialized role which requires deep hands-on experience in the following areas:
- Maintenance of Inventory Stock ledger
- Material movements (of all varieties) and roll-forward
- End-to-end process understanding of Supply Chain
- End-to-end process understanding of manufacturing processes (the perfect candidate would have direct experience in a pharmaceutical manufacturing process, but there is also value in having seen diverse settings and systems, and the fundamentals of inventory accounting and management will be 100% applicable in our setting)
- Standard cost management
- Treatment of variances (PPV and usage)
- Receiving function
- Purchasing and the use of purchase requisitions and purchase orders
- Vendor contracting – including the ability to translate and comprehend complex arrangements and effectively translate to the GAAP accounting requirements and the necessary supporting accounting process.
- Vendor payables and payments – having some direct experience managing the accounts payable process would be plus, as this role has a dominant connection to manufacturing accounting.
- Management of 3rd Parties (Contract Manufacturers and 3PLs)
- Inventory Reserves and loss management.
- Imports, exports, customs/duties, and VAT
- Business Reporting for Operations and FP&A Leads
- Overhead and treatment of Cost of Revenue department allocations
- The individual must be comfortable in a high priority and high intensity role while interacting with key business partners (internal and external).
- The ideal candidate is one who has an aptitude for learning, especially in uncharted territory, customer-centric and accustomed to a fast-paced environment.
- Proactively learn and understand our manufacturing process to assist in accrual efficiency.
- Assist with implementation of various financial systems and special projects, including the ERP Project, as the manufacturing accounting SME, even more specifically, as the lead designer on inventory accounting system tracking (whether costed immediately as R&D or layered as inventory cost).
- Document procedures performed and best practices.
- Improve current processes by redesigning to facilitate automation and useful reporting (risk and materiality-based approach).
- Prepare fluctuation analyses and work closely with FP&A and the Business Partners to develop cost reporting that meets their requirements and helps provide meaningful information to run the business, including actualizing results beyond general ledger close.
- Assist with the implementation and maintain and adhere to internal controls under SOX 404(b) and policies and procedures. As we enhance processes over time, including automating transactions, tailoring to always maintain SOX coverage will be important. Direct ownership of inventory-related SOX control activities will be important.
- Will have direct reports.
- Complete other Accounting / Finance duties as requested.
Requirements:
- BA/ BS Degree in Accounting or Finance (or related experience) with a minimum of 10 years of manufacturing accounting experience required. Biopharma industry experience is highly desired.
- Demonstrated experience with complex accrual accounting and estimation process used for GAAP reporting.
- Demonstrated experience in working closely with business partners and vendors in high priority accounting areas.
- Accounting experience in a publicly traded company required.
- Strong oral and written communication skills with proven ability to effectively communicate to employees at all levels and to outside vendors.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, prepare, and orchestrate monthly business partner sessions in an efficient and effective manner, following a required close cadence.

- Ability to manage multiple tasks under strict deadlines, with a high attention to detail.
- Positive work ethic and organizational skills with a high attention to detail.
- A collaborative team player who is able to partner with internal and external contacts at all levels.
- Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
- Ability to be nimble and adjust to changing priorities and focus.
