The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Cancer Research Technology Program (CRTP) develops and implements emerging technology, cancer biology expertise and research capabilities to accomplish NCI research objectives. The CRTP is an outward-facing, multi-disciplinary hub purposed to enable the external cancer research community. A major focus of the CRTP is the National Cryo-EM Facility (NCEF) with the goal of assisting extramural cancer researchers by providing cryo-EM services for their selected targets.
KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Independently prepare and freeze samples on grids for cryo-EM imaging
- Independently image cryo-samples on transmission electron microscopes with direct detectors
- Interact with users to ensure the setup of data collections is according to project needs
- Develop workflows for efficient screening of samples and for high-end data collection
- Service and maintain cryo-electron microscopes, direct detectors, and other cameras
- Service and maintain grid freezing equipment
- Provide scientific and technical advice to investigators on sample preparation, experimental design, and data analysis
- Provide guidance on new scientific directions that could have an impact on improving the services provided by the facility
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
- Possession of a PhD degree from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
- In addition to the education requirements, electron microscopy experience is also required
- Experience with cryo-EM specimen preparation techniques
- Must be detail-oriented and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Able to prepare detailed, concise technical reports, including assisting with publications
- Strong laboratory skills
- Able to work dynamically in a diverse team environment
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:
- At least 3 years of hands-on experience in cryo-EM and transmission electron microscopy (Includes years as a student)
- Direct experience with all aspects of electron microscope operation
- Knowledge of computational aspects of cryo-EM
- Experience with automated sample freezing equipment for cryo-TEM
- Protein purification experience
