The Senior Director, Head of ERP DevOps will be responsible for overseeing Global ERP DevOps - The function that (in conjunction with other IT functions including those aligned to business functions) defines, delivers, and supports business solutions enabled by the core ERP system. This role is charged with building and running a DevOps team. Gilead IT operates in a vertically integrated DevOps model, and as such the leader of this function will oversee and manage end-to-end solution architecture, solution delivery, solution test, and solution operations for ERP.
This role will work closely with the leaders in charge of delivery for Releases 2 and 3 of Gilead's current ERP transformation program shifting from Oracle to SAP S4/HANA. In Release 2, we are shifting Global Manufacturing and Direct Procurement Commercial Order to Cash and Indirect Procurement for Europe, Mexico, and Israel with Go-Live in August 2024. For Release 3, we are shifting Clinical Commercial Order to Cash and Indirect Procurement for Rest of World as well as Gilead Clinical Distribution Manufacturing and Secondary Packaging. Release 3's target completion date is 2025-2026.
The Senior Director, Head of ERP DevOps will support business strategy. To be effective in this role, he/she must partner with functional IT capability leaders and counterparts across business-facing IT verticals like PDM, Commercial, Finance, Procurement etc. to understand functional demands and drivers, and then translate these requirements into solutions and ensure delivery. This leader should have the business acumen, domain expertise and communication skills to shape, articulate and execute a cohesive development and operations strategy.

The salary range for this position is: $216,070.00 - $279,620.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. - Lead the ERP DevOps team to ensure efficient and effective development and deployment of ERP solutions, enabling the conversion from Oracle to SAP. Leads a highly complex and wide-ranging portfolio of projects that significantly influences and impacts the short- and long-range direction of multiple business groups and teams.
- Independently determines how to structure and approach multiple complex, large-scale assignments or projects to achieve or exceed strategic objectives within the targeted timelines and resource parameters. Leverages synergies and resources across assignments to maximize efficiencies and achieve consistencies where appropriate.
- Plays a key role in the strategic and long-range planning and innovation across a broad portfolio of large-scale, highly complex assignments and projects. Conceives new and novel approaches and ideas that significantly advance business and team outcomes.
- Ensure all ERP delivery and operations meet Quality/GXP/Validation standards
- Ensure thoughtful performance management of individuals within the ERP DevOps team and individualized career development plans based on individual needs and corporate strategy
- Develop and implement DevOps best practices for ERP system development, including continuous integration, continuous delivery, and agile methodologies
- Enhance business value through collaborative identification and delivery of business needs. Deliver on portfolio investments and ensure Business Value/Outcomes are realized based on prioritized business needs, and ensure governance of demands across business units and business processes
- Change management employed at this level significantly influences multiple projects and/or our largest-scale and highest- profile projects.
- Ensure necessary ERP solutions are documented, and solution ownership is available for projects and ongoing compliance activities
- Manage cost center and innovation investments and drive for “cost to serve” efficiencies
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand business requirements and translate them into effective ERP solutions
- Oversee the management of ERP systems, ensuring they are up-to-date, secure, and meeting the needs of the business
- Develop and manage the ERP DevOps budget, ensuring resources are used effectively
- Provide technical leadership and guidance to the ERP DevOps team, fostering an environment of continuous learning and improvement
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations related to ERP systems
- Support ERP Transformation: Support the in-flight Enterprise SAP S/4 HANA program covering the scope of Order to Cash, Procure to Pay, Plan to Deliver, Record to Report, Project Accounting, etc. that is expected to complete in the next two years
Key Skillsets Required
- Cross Functional Partnership: Serve as a trusted advisor to leaders within business facing IT verticals and support their mission. Partner with senior leadership to create technology strategies that support the objects of their functions. Understand the value drivers of the business and ensure IT solutions are scalable and can expand to support new therapeutic areas while considering innovation and cost to serve
- Domain Expertise: Partner with business facing IT vertical teams to create technology strategy that optimizes operational processes. Provides insight into business processes that advance user adoption, improve customer satisfaction, and refine management reports such as those used for financial oversight based on the use of day-to-day transactional systems.
- Quality/GXP/Validation expertise in the context of life sciences industry requirements and technology enablement practices
- Hands on SAP S4/HANA Expertise within the ERP landscape and understanding of upcoming technical capabilities and trends in the SAP S4 domain
- Strategic mindset with the ability to execute: Define and deliver against strategy, implement automation, improve user satisfaction and drive for operational efficiencies to obtain measurable business value. Support strategies to invest in cloud-first business architecture. Deliver scalable and flexible solutions to meet unanticipated business demand. Continuously invest in innovation to incubate new opportunities requested by partners in support of the Strategic Technology Council investment and reduce cost to serve through careful consideration of technology investments
- IT as a Business Value Driver: Supports the ongoing development, coordination, and execution of the integrated IT strategy including labor, investment choices, organizational priorities, and scorecards and dashboards as well as ensures governance and the definition of IT ways of working
- Delivers on Technology Strategy: Sees Information Technology as a competitive advantage and understands the value drivers of the business and ensures IT solutions are scalable/provide efficiencies to support operational overhead and advance new therapeutic areas while taking into account innovation and reduce cost to serve. Deliver scalable and flexible solutions to meet unanticipated business demand. Continuously invests in innovation to incubate new opportunities requested by partners in support of the Strategic Technology Council investment and make value-based decisions through careful consideration of technology investments and their associated business benefit
- Manage Complexity and Drive for Standardization: Able to synthesize customer needs and challenges presented across functional capabilities within Finance, HR, Legal, IT (as a customer), Clinical Drug Development, Medical Affairs, Commercial and Pharmaceutical Development. Make sound and timely decisions based on corporate needs while enforcing technology standards
- Lead Leadership and Delivery at Enterprise Scale: Experience and able to manage DevOps teams and deliver in a matrix environment and at enterprise scale across functional value chains
- Leadership: Proven ability to build, develop and lead teams and rally organization around the vision
Minimum Education & Experience
- 18+ years' relevant experience with High School Diploma or equivalent or
- 16+ years' relevant experience with AA or
- 14+ years' relevant experience with BS / BA or
- 12+ years' relevant experience with MS / MA / MBA
- Computer Science or related discipline is preferred
- Extensive IT experience in a corporate or other relevant business environment
- Extensive experience leading IT or related functional teams as a formal people manager
- Extensive experience leading IT projects of varying size and complexity for one or more business functions, with a focus on Agile and DevOps methodologies
- 10+ years' experience leading a portfolio of IT projects and/or projects for large enterprise solutions
- Has an expert-level of knowledge of IT architectural principles, practices, standards, methods and tools across the spectrum of end-to-end solution design, and the latest trends and evolutions in own domain, as evidenced by proven track record in leading large-scale and highly complex IT projects.
- Has made critical contributions to long-range, future-facing business and technology strategies and roadmaps with value and impact across some of our largest or multiple business areas.
- Plays a leadership role in assessing and recommending solutions, options and trade-offs of significant investment and
- potential ROI.
- Significant experience and proven effectiveness contributing expert input into longer-range IT and business strategies and roadmaps for relevant area / domain
- Ideally, experience providing input and direction on large-scale IT or related investments and budgets
- Significant experience managing IT consultants and vendors
- Extensive experience supporting IT integrations and cloud transformations in a corporate or other relevant business environment
- Track record of participation and thought leadership in external forums / associations or other entities that influence the direction of domain of expertise
- Broad knowledge of current and emerging technologies, technology directions and strategic application to business needs including the ability to differentiate between a relevant trend and hype
