Job Details
The Principal Business Analyst (BA) in Research and Preclinical Development IT will work with Research Scientists and act as a liaison between Research Scientists and technical teams to define and deliver data management solutions. The BA interfaces between Research Systems Analysts, Programmers, Data Architects, Scientists, and IT Project Managers to ensure that information technology designs meet the needs of the end users and comply with the comprehensive Research-wide data management plan. The BA develops user requirements and design plans that incorporate new system solutions into the overall Research systems architecture through documentation of scientific processes, data workflows, and product/service requirements. In addition, BAs ensure that the solution meets the requirements of the Scientists by engaging the team in an iterative software development cycle. This position requires a passion for science and drug discovery, functional knowledge of the drug discovery process, logical knowledge of existing system capabilities, business process analysis, and requirements documentation in a highly complex scientific environment.
As a Principal Business Analyst a typical day may include the following:
- Lead scientific-related business needs assessment, as well as facilitate the design, build and implementation of IT systems. Work with scientists and laboratory personnel to understand their business processes and suggest improvement opportunities to enhance end-user experience
- Work closely with end-users and technical team members to translate high-level business and user requirements into functional and design specifications using structured business and technical analysis and data modeling techniques (e.g. activity diagrams, entity-relationship diagrams, etc.)
- Act as an expert technical and scientific resource to software development staff in all phases of the development and implementation process
- Participate in user research, usability and acceptance testing
- Partner with research scientists and technical teams to understand and define system goals and technical system requirements through techniques such as story mapping and functional decomposition techniques
- Understand system interdependencies and collaborate with project teams accordingly
- Assist in evaluating cost-benefit and ROI analyses
- Must be able to handle a variety of tasks, effectively solve problems with numerous and complex variables, and be able to shift priorities as needed
- Train, develop and manage junior scientific business analysts
- Contributes to the definition, implementation and governance of the BA practices and processes for Research and preclinical Development IT
- May lead or supervise a small team (e.g., 1 - 3 people), assigning day-to-day work.

- Ability to think analytically and interpret relevant data and information.
To be considered for this role, you must have an Advanced degree as well as 5 years of relevant scientific experience, including 2-3 years data, business analyst or relevant IT project execution role. Experience in business process & requirements gathering through execution. Experience with creating & producing genetically modified animals to support our VelocigeneTM technology center. At least 5 years of relevant scientific Research experience (e.g., biologic and/or small molecule drug discovery, cell biology, molecular biology, immunology, and/or invivo studies). Must be onsite at least 3 days a week.
