Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location.  The anticipated wage for this position is

$144,000 - $211,200

Job Description:

The Human Error Prevention/Human Performance Reliability Sr. Director is accountable for developing, implementing, managing, and sustaining systems and capabilities required to support best in class Human Error Prevention/Human Performance Reliability for Lilly Manufacturing & Quality (M&Q) operations in support of ‘right first time’ execution.  This role ensures the integration and sustainability of Human Error Prevention/Human Performance Reliability principles into all sites and functions. This includes coaching and monitoring the application of Human Error Prevention/Human Performance Reliability methodologies, organizational learning and communication related to Human Error Prevention/Human Performance Reliability and metrics that assess operational risk and performance.

Major accountabilities include but are not limited to:

  • Leads global M&Q Human Error Prevention/Human Performance Reliability activities, including facilitating Human Error Prevention/Human Performance Reliability related global forums comprised of cross-site representation, managing global messaging communication, and overseeing global reinforcement efforts.
  • Facilitates the development, deployment and integration of Human Error Prevention/Human Performance Reliability standards and practices within the manufacturing and quality system framework.
  • Leads the design, communication and deployment of high reliability and error reduction practices.
  • Leads the development of education and training processes that build Human Error Prevention/Human Performance Reliability competency at all levels of the organization. 
  • Works with senior M&Q Leadership to ensure impact to Human Error Prevention/Human Performance Reliability is considered when designing/implementing global initiatives and prioritization decisions.
  • Works to ensure the appropriate funding of Human Error Prevention/Human Performance Reliability practices during Business Planning.
  • Owns, facilitates, and executes the assessment and governance processes associated with Human Error Prevention/Human Performance Reliability.
  • Connects with Industry and external experts to ensure Lilly is incorporating best practices into our standards and systems. Pursues and maintains two-way benchmarking relationships with relevant organizations and companies, seeking to involve a broad cross-section of M&Q employees in the experience.
  • Coaches and mentors global personnel on Human Error Prevention/Human Performance Reliability principles.  Partners with site management to ensure the sustained integration of Human Error Prevention/Human Performance Reliability.  Works with local Human Performance program leads to develop and implement local Human Error Prevention/Human Performance Reliability reinforcement strategies.  
  • Identifies and facilitates projects and programs to reduce risk and improve performance based on observations and evaluation of performance metrics and trends.  Leads initiatives directed at identifying and mitigating integrated operational risk.
  • Provides Subject Matter Expert (SME) input to enterprise and local level risk evaluations and performance improvement strategies owned by site management teams.
  • Implements strategies to enable operational activities to be conducted in alignment with industry leading Human Error Prevention/Human Performance Reliability resilience practices. Implements assessment and monitoring approaches to evaluate trends and progress over time.  Provides and analyzes local assessments, such as periodic surveys, to determine progress against cultural objectives.
  • Upon request, provides SME input to Quality and Safety investigations.  Supports internal sharing of investigational findings and risk knowledge.  Coordinates global Human Error Prevention/Human Performance Reliability trending efforts to ensure sustained improvements.

Basic Qualifications:

  • B.S./Master’s degree in technical discipline (i.e., Engineering, Science, Human Error Prevention/Human Performance Reliability, Organizational Psychology, etc.).
  • 8 or more years of relevant professional experience.

  • Demonstrated experience in key technical facets of role.
  • Experience in a formal leadership / direct supervisory position.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence management on key decisions.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with ability to influence across organizational levels and to facilitate teaching and training of others.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive results and lead change while managing multiple, shifting priorities.
  • Strong problem-solving, critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • High level of self-awareness and emotional intelligence.
