Associate Director - Global Supply Chain Sustainability and Risk Management

Position Description:

As part Lilly’s emerging and expanding Supply Chain Resiliency and Sustainability Team, which owns broad initiatives to bolster our supply chains end-to-end, Eli Lilly and Company has recognized the need to advance various resiliency and sustainability-focused programs across Lilly Manufacturing. This new team will be responsible for owning or stewarding these programs and serving as expert advisors to the internal and external groups focusing on risk, resiliency, sustainability, and supply chain compliance.

The Associate Director Global Supply Chain Sustainability and Risk Management will play a significant role in advancing the processes and capabilities related to supply chain sustainability across the Global Manufacturing organization and network of sites. This role will be responsible for leading sustainability initiatives specific to the Global Supply Chain function and for ideating, creating, and stewarding Lilly’s broader manufacturing and supply chain sustainability strategy.

Successful candidates will be able to perform the following:

(1) apply deep technical understanding to meet the needs of the business

(2) influence leaders across functions and geographies at multiple levels within the organization

(3) operate with high level of autonomy and authority after onboarding is complete

(4) navigate change and ambiguity as future capabilities mature and develop

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop Lilly’s Supply Chain Sustainability Strategy or Roadmap in partnership with Global Supply Planning, Manufacturing Strategy, Site Supply Chain leaders, Global Logistics, Global Procurement, and other key cross-functional peers.
  • Recommend this strategy to Global Supply Chain leadership, Manufacturing Site Heads, and Senior Manufacturing Lead Team for ongoing oversight and reporting on progress.
  • Develop new programs and metrics to measure progress toward Supply chain sustainability strategic roadmap.
  • Monitor industry and supply chain trends, regulatory requirements, and best practices to develop supply chain sustainability strategy across all regions and supply chain activities.
  • Partner in the delivery of sustainability targets relating to climate resilience, greenhouse gas emissions, water, waste, responsible sourcing, packaging circular economy, energy procurement, life cycle assessment, etc. via direct reports and the broader supply chain organization.
  • Influence cross-functionally and laterally to educate, gain support, and embed sustainability agenda into all aspects of the supply chain and manufacturing organization.
  • Engage with peers, senior supply chain leaders, and senior manufacturing leaders to gain buy-in and support in program execution to address material sustainability issues.
  • Identify, develop, and embed changes across supply chain operations to deliver organizational sustainability ambitions, commitments, and targets.
  • Identify and leverage internal stakeholders e.g., finance, legal, new product development, and communications to progress sustainability agenda.
  • Identify and leverage external partnerships such as customers, suppliers, and NGOs to progress sustainability agenda.
  • Build network of Sustainability Ambassadors across Global Supply Chain and Manufacturing.
  • Analyze, estimate, or propose potential funding or financial investment required for supply chain sustainability initiatives.
  • Contribute to organizational sustainability reporting.
  • Partner with various groups to track and measure movement along Lilly’s existing corporate sustainability goals.

Key Capabilities:

  • Ability to lead collaboration across diverse teams to motivate groups to collectively meet sustainability objectives.
  • Ability to educate or mentor colleagues and indirect reports to support and develop wider sustainability skillsets.
  • Deep knowledge of sustainability landscape and relevant legislative requirements.
  • Ability to communicate with key stakeholders on global, national and regional issues e.g., climate change, biodiversity and responsible sourcing.
  • Knowledge of supply chain and key sustainability drivers and impacts.
  • Ability to network and influence without direct authority to build or maintain relationships at peer, director and senior management levels.
  • Strategic thinking, analytical skills, ability to track and extract insight from complex data sets, e.g., greenhouse gas emissions, life cycle assessment, etc.
  • Outstanding presentation and reporting skills.
  • Deep understanding of Supply Chain, Manufacturing processes, and financial policies.
  • Ability to influence without authority across multiple organizations and geographies.
  • Able to communicate at all levels of the organization.
  • Organized and self-motivated.
  • Proficiency in Data Analysis and SAP.

Basic Requirements:

  • Minimum 7 years of experience in Supply Chain, Business, Operations, Sustainability/Environmental Management or other related positions.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, supply chain, operations, sustainability/environmental management, or other related subject.

Additional Preferences:

  • Master’s degree in business, supply chain, operations or sustainability/environmental management related subject
  • Professional membership of sustainability, environmental or supply chain institute.
  • Additional sustainability education, training and/or certification through professional organizations.
  • Extensive experience in one or more of these areas: supply chain, sustainability, social or environmental compliance.
  • Experience leading, developing and implementing sustainability strategy, ideally in a supply chain context.
  • Experience in one or more of: supply chain management, environmental sustainability, GHG emissions, responsible sourcing, circular economy, life cycle analysis.
  • Engaged at a leadership level in multi-stakeholder sustainability initiative or group e.g., industry or product associations.
  • Additional supply chain education, training and/or certification through online courses or professional supply chain organizations.

Travel and Location Requirements:

  • Location: Lilly Corporate Center – Indianapolis, IN (may work remotely on occasion)
  • Travel: Less than 10-15% travel required
