Job Description
The Protein Engineering group is a specialized team within the Protein Therapeutics department that is responsible for the optimization and engineering of large molecule drug candidates. We seek a highly motivated Associate Scientist to contribute to the engineering of novel antibody binding domains, fusion proteins (e.g. cytokines), and multispecific formats using structure-based rational and/or computational design approaches, as well as contribute to the development of new methodologies to enable high-throughput functional screening of engineered molecules. The successful candidate will support cross-functional project teams to develop novel biologics for clinical development.
Essential Duties and Job Functions:
In this laboratory-based role, the successful candidate will support efforts to optimize large molecule therapeutics. The candidate will implement biophysical, biochemical, and functional assays to characterize biologics for diverse target classes and evaluate new technologies. Additional job requirements:
Knowledge, Experience and Skills:
Applicants must have a B.S./M.S. in molecular biology, biochemistry, structural biology or a related field, with a minimum of 5+ for B.S./ 3+ for M.S. years of relevant professional experience. An ideal candidate will have experience in most of the following areas:
Preferred Experience:
An ideal candidate will preferably have 7+ for B.S./ 5+ for M.S. years of industry experience.
The salary range for this position is: $124,015.00 - $160,490.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.

- Enable rapid optimization of novel antibody and protein therapeutics via humanization, structure-based design, and/or library-based approaches.
- Characterize the binding and functional properties of novel antibodies, multispecifics, immunocytokines, and other biologics.
- Maintain familiarity with scientific literature and independently design, execute, analyze, and interpret experiments.
- Effectively communicate and present project goals and experimental findings to diverse audiences.
- Organize and execute multiple projects in a collaborative team setting.
- Thrive in a fast paced, data-driven and scientifically rigorous environment.
- Maintain compliance with company policies and record keeping.
Knowledge, Experience and Skills:
Applicants must have a B.S./M.S. in molecular biology, biochemistry, structural biology or a related field, with a minimum of 5+ for B.S./ 3+ for M.S. years of relevant professional experience. An ideal candidate will have experience in most of the following areas:
- Proficient in antibody humanization, liability remediation, and in generating different multispecific formats, immunocytokines, and fusion proteins.
- Experience with mammalian cell culture, protein expression, purification, and characterization.
- Familiarity with structure-based protein engineering and design. Experience using computational design software (e.g. Rosetta, MPNN, etc) is a plus.
- Experience with biochemical assays and quantitative analysis of protein-protein binding interactions (e.g. cell-based reporter assays, FACS, ELISA, Octet, Carterra, etc).
- Experience with molecular biology techniques including cloning, vector design, and mutagenesis.
- Familiarity with in vitro display technologies and library design is a plus.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to multi-task and self-motivated with excellent problem-solving skills.
