The Role

This is a summer co-op opportunity in Cambridge, MA from 1/21/25- 6/20/25. Applicants must be available for the entire duration of the internship. Start date will be 1/21/25

Moderna is seeking a Co-op to join the Antigen Design and Selection team at their Cambridge, MA site. The candidate will primarily support antigen screening for the Infectious Diseases Research Area by expressing, purifying, and characterizing recombinant antigens for development of viral and bacterial vaccine programs. Specifically, the candidate will utilize mammalian cell culturing techniques for protein expression, chromatographic methods for protein purification, and perform standard biochemical techniques for characterization and of purified proteins. In addition to established methods, the candidate will also research and develop new expression/purification techniques to deliver on difficult targets. The candidate will align on project goals and deliver high-quality antigens to meet tight deadlines.

Heres What Youll Do

  • Protein expression primarily in Escherichia coli or mammalian cells

  • Protein purification by chromatography-based methods (affinity, ion exchange, size-exclusion, use of FPLC systems for semi-automated purifications)

  • Screening of membrane bound antigens using flow cytometry

  • Characterization of proteins by standard biochemical techniques (SDS-PAGE, western blots, thermal melts, activity assays, BLI)

  • Interpret, summarize, and present experimental data and results at group meetings, project meetings and department meetings

Heres What Youll Need (Minimum Qualifications)

  • Preferred Skills: microbial identifications

  • Expertise in industry standards and guidelines, including USP/EP compendia testing requirements

  • A proven track record of supporting the implementation of environmental monitoring programs

  • Must be a current student in 3rd or 4th year of Bachelor's program or enrolled in a Master's program in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Biology, or a related discipline.

  • Preferably has experience with mammalian cell culture and fundamental wet lab techniques such as SDS-PAGE, Western blot, or ELISA.

  • Prior co-op or internship experience in a protein biochemistry laboratory is advantageous.

  • GPA of 3.5 on a 4 scale or equivalent

  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently as well as the ability to contribute to high performing teams.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Detail-oriented with a strong ability to follow SOPs and excellent analytical skills
