Lets do this. Lets change the world. In this vital role, you will lead the Global Medical, Rare Disease Therapeutic Area (TA) team. This team provides medical strategy for programs in the rare disease therapeutic areas.

Responsibilities:

  • Member of Global Medical Leadership Team

  • Serves as Global Medical Lead on the Rare Disease Therapeutic Area Leadership Team

  • Leads the development and execution of multi-year global rare disease medical strategy appropriately aligned with overall strategy and incorporating R&D functional strategies (e.g. clinical, regulatory, safety, compliance)

  • Acts as a senior company representative interacting with external scientific leaders, medical decision makers, professional societies, patient organization and/or regulatory authorities as appropriate

  • Responsible for development and in-year implementation of the global medical plans supporting global medical strategy in collaboration with ex-functional partners

  • Establishes appropriate strategic partnerships with centers of excellence and health care professionals in areas of scientific interest

  • Collaborates with Legal, Compliance and Regulatory to ensure proper and ethical interactions between Medical Affairs staff and external stakeholders

  • Contribute to Medical Affairs Strategy by providing deep medical/ clinical expertise in the rare disease area

  • Oversee Planning, designing, and managing global medical Advisory Boards as appropriate

  • Oversee medical review and approval of Investigator Initiated Research (IIR) proposals and other grants through the grant approval process

  • Provides Medical leadership and input into oversight of Rare Disease portfolio as an integral member of the Therapeutic Area Governance (TAG) team partnering with cross-functional TA leaders

  • Monitor and communicate progress against medical plan; propose and initiate initiatives as need to adjust to disease area requirements

  • Collaboration with key organizations to ensure relevant and timely capturing of scientific insights and performance metrics enabling ongoing refinement of the global medical strategy as needed

  • Partnership with Regional Medical Heads to align medical strategies and medical plans for all programs in TA portfolio. Enable consistency and quality of activities/deliverables, along with continual refinement of strategies when appropriate to achieve overall objectives

  • Manage development and application of annual departmental budgets to ensure key strategic initiatives are implemented and the objective is achieved

  • Raises awareness internally of key programs and professional societies critical to ensuring patient access

  • Manage team of senior medical professionals, including setting and driving team objectives, performance management, workforce planning, and career development

Basic Qualifications

  • Doctorate degree & 8 years of medical affairs experience OR

  • Masters degree & 10 years of medical affairs experience OR

  • Bachelors degree & 12 years of medical affairs experience AND

  • 8 years of direct managerial experience. Previous experience managing other managers

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD), PhD, or PharmD

  • Broad and formal leadership experience

  • International and/or Global experience

  • Demonstrated ability as a medical expert in a complex matrix environment

  • Pharmaceutical product development, product lifecycle and commercialization process

  • Knowledge with understanding of other functions, including but not limited to, Medical Affairs, Clinical development, Clinical Operations, Value & Access, Safety, Regulatory and Commercial

  • Rare Disease expertise and knowledge

  • Experience in global/regional/local medical practice and healthcare ecosystems

  • Skilled at engagement and scientific exchange with external medical community

  • Clinical research experience

  • In-depth understanding of the scientific method and clinical applications based on medical, scientific and practical rationale

  • Familiarity with concepts of clinical research and clinical trial design, including biostatistics

  • Sound scientific and clinical judgement

  • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practices (GCP), region regulations and guidelines, and applicable international regulatory requirements

  • Familiarity of pharmaceutical industry and legal/health system environment

  • Finance/budgeting and resource management experience

  • Ability to lead, manage, and motivate others in a complex, multi-functional, multi-national matrix environment

  • Skilled at effectively presenting ideas and documenting complex medical/clinical concepts in both written and oral communication

  • Experience solving problems while exhibiting superior judgment and a balanced, realistic understanding of issues

  • Network of medical, clinical contacts in Rare Disease products/therapeutic areas

The annual base salary range for VP level opportunities in the US is $307,500 $512,500.
