Position Summary & Responsibilities
The Sr. Manager of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) is responsible for delivering HSE, security, technical, and regulatory support to the Allston, Marlborough, and Bedford, MA facilities. These facilities encompass Product Analysis and Development, Cell Therapy Analytical, and Nucleic Acid Process Development laboratories, and will also support future state GMP Operations in Cell Therapy. Responsible for the implementation of all necessary measures and initiatives required by federal, state and local regulations pertaining to safety and environmental protection.Provides direction and is responsible for developing, maintaining and improving programs to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and company standards.
The Sr. Managerof HSE sits on the site leadership team (SLT) and interfaces with site and above site (Resilience) senior management. Responsible for strategic implementation of integration activities as well as addressing day-to-day tactical issues and mentoring/coaching direct reports and will supervise technical consultants as appropriate.
- Ensure compliance with all current EHS federal, state, and local regulatory requirements.
- Partner and negotiate with federal, state, and local officials as necessary to ensure compliance while balancing business and operational needs.
- Provide consultation and information regarding worker safety, fire safety, industrial hygiene, and environmental protection.
- Partner with business colleagues to address and correct concerns as they arise.
- Participate in the due diligence process for new business acquisitions and help with the design of new facilities or major renovations of existing facilities to ensure proper EHS considerations are in place.
- Promote a learning culture within the business to reduce the EHS risks and ensure a safe and compliant work environment.
- Ensure appropriate risk assessments are conducted and corrective actions implemented to minimize or eliminate injuries and environmental impact.
- Identify EHS and Security risks for projects and create mitigation plans.
- Maintain OSHA and other recordkeeping requirements.
- Ensure EHS recordkeeping and data integrity to provide the business with accurate reporting and metrics to support EHS initiatives.
- Investigate and evaluate root causes for occupational injuries/illnesses, incidents, and near misses and maintain relevant data for driving strategic program decisions.
- Make OSHA recordability determinations and coordinate workman’s compensation for occupational injuries/illnesses.
- Manage site security, and provide support for emergency preparedness, response, and business continuity as needed.
- Conduct self-assessments and inspections to maintain inspection readiness.
- Chair site employee safety and environmental committees to ensure an aligned approach throughout the organization.
- Sit on the Corporate EHS Governance Council.
- Develop and implement all required EHS training to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Apply appropriate best practices to identify and facilitate improvements to business processes, facilities, and equipment including capital projects and management of change.
Minimum Qualifications
- Applied professional HSE experience supporting vaccine/biologics manufacturing and laboratory operations at a site level
- Working knowledge of environment, health, and safety regulations, codes, and standards, including OSHA, EPA, DOT, NIOSH, FDA, and other regulatory requirements applicable to GMP and non-GMP environments
- Extensive experience managing direct reports, attracting talent, and building a strong team
- Excellent teamwork and collaboration skillsable to facilitate and lead cross-functional and interdepartmental teams at different sites in a fast-paced and diverse environment focused on creating value for the business.
- Effective at reframing challenges into opportunities. Track record of being resilient and adaptable in navigating organizational resistance and influencing others to adopt new behaviors and approaches.
- Must be able to present information in a way that is simple and easy to understand by the targeted audience(s) that could include employees at all levels.
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills and can establish and foster continued employee trust.
- Demonstrate complex problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze and evaluate options and solutions, exercise sound judgment in decision-making, and work independently with minimal direction as the Company’s subject matter expert.
- Excellent organizational and oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree with a concentration in Safety/Environmental/Engineering.
- Master’s degree in Safety/Environmental/Engineering
- Knowledge of safety culture and "Grassroots Safety".
- Certification in one or more of the following areas is preferred: Certified Safety Professional (CSP), and Certified Industrial Hygiene (CIH).

Our target base pay hiring range for this position is $120,000.00 - $180,000.00 per year. Actual base pay is dependent upon a number of factors, including but not limited to, the candidate’s geographical location, relevant experience, qualifications, skills and knowledge.
