Summary / purpose of the position
The Director, External Scientific Collaborations (ESC) drives key innovative and strategic projects and priorities for USMA within the therapeutic area (TA) of cholestatic liver. The ESC provides specialist medical/scientific input into core medical affairs activities such as: healthcare institution/society interactions; generation of clinical and scientific data, and strategic planning.
This role works closely with USMA TA leads/heads teams as well as cross-functional teams to provide strategic medical insight and strategies to support medical activities. This individual is responsible for delivering strategic and scientific presentations; developing and maintaining professional and credible relationships with external academic institutions and research groups/centers, and actively participating in relevant internal meetings and helps in the development of medical affairs strategies for oncology assets, as well as providing relevant scientific and technical training.
Main responsibilities / job expectations
- Drives key US medical affairs strategic and/or innovative projects within the TA
- Establish and sustain critical medical society, network and/or collaborative research group relationships to better understand the strategic priorities of these organizations and to define opportunities for alignment and partnerships focusing on improving patient outcomes/disease management, appropriate access to medications and heath care quality improvement
- Facilitate collaborative scientific exchange between Ipsen and academic and community institutions, medical societies, and networks
- In partnership with Patient Advocacy, serve as a key point of contact for Ipsen with patient advocacy organizations for Medical Affairs
- In partnership with internal colleagues, develop a multi-institution/cross-territory strategic engagement plan positioning Ipsen as a trusted industry collaborator
- Collaborate internally to coordinate External Medical Education opportunities in order to increase scientific understanding
- Works closely with field medical teams to maximize impact on execution of enterprise priority studies and key innovative projects
- Keeps abreast of professional information and technology through conferences and/or medical literature and acts as a therapeutic area resource.
- Represents Ipsen at external meetings including investigator meetings, scientific association meetings, advisory boards, etc.
- May serve as reviewer for scientific accuracy of materials for external use
- Ensures budgets, timelines, and compliance requirements are factored into programs' scientific activities.
Knowledge, Abilities, Experience & Key Technical Competencies Required
- Understanding of the US healthcare system and academic institutional settings with demonstrated ability to navigate and lead through an ambiguous and changing healthcare and business environments
- Proficient at building credibility with investigators & collaborative research partners
- Ability to balances business and scientific acumen during engagements
- Strong, proven relationship management skills with senior leaders (e.g., C-suite leaders, industry-affairs office personnel, thought leaders, scientists, research staff, etc.)
- Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in the biotech/ pharmaceutical industry or academia or equivalent. Proven leadership skills in a cross-functional environment. Ability to interact externally and internally to execute enterprise business strategy.
- Prior customer-facing experience preferred.
- Experience in liver related diseases preferred.
- Must possess excellent oral and written English communication skills.
The annual base salary range for this position is $177,000-$259,600.
This job is eligible to participate in our short-term incentives program as well as our long-term incentives program.

The pay range displayed above is the range of base pay compensation within which Ipsen expects to pay for this role at the time of this posting. Individual compensation within this range depends on a variety of factors, including, but not limited to, prior education and experience, job-related knowledge and demonstrated skills.
