Job Description
The Genomics Research Center (GRC) is a center of excellence for genetics and genomics that supports both Discovery and Development. The GRC plays an integral role towards our goal of developing extraordinary genetics and genomics research, focusing on finding the right targets and helping us better understand not only human disease biology but also the behavior of and response to our drugs in clinical trials! Within the GRC, the Department of Bioinformatics is responsible for data analysis and provides analytical insight for both internal and external data. This involves the identification and characterization of underlying genetic, epigenetic, or genomic factors that are associated with disease diagnosis, prognosis and response (efficacy and safety) to drug treatment, identification of new targets, and interpretation of the impact of genetic and genomic evidence from population-based studies. To support our data ecosystem and data storage strategies, we have an outstanding opportunity for a Sr. Scientist I in Lake County, Illinois.
Responsibilities
Work closely with GRC stakeholders to understand data requirements and design efficient and scalable database schemas to support data storage and analysis.
Develop and implement RDMS, data lake, and lakehouse architectures to store and manage structured and unstructured data, ensuring seamless integration with downstream analytics applications.
Partner with research-serving IT partners to ensure proper configuration and operational stability of critical database environments, including performance monitoring, capacity planning, and troubleshooting.
Provide guidance and recommendations on appropriate database technologies and architectures to support GRC's data strategy, ensuring alignment with business objectives, and future growth and development.
Collaborate with data analysts and scientists to develop and maintain efficient and optimized queries, and provide guidance on query performance tuning and optimization techniques to ensure efficient data retrieval and analysis.
Generate and maintain comprehensive documentation, including database schemas, data models, and architectural designs, to ensure clear understanding and easy accessibility of the GRC's data ecosystem for future reference and knowledge sharing.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
Bachelors Degree or equivalent education and typically 10 years of experience, Masters Degree or equivalent education and typically 8 years of experience, PhD and no experience necessary.
Proficiency in traditional RDMS (Relational Database Management System) technologies such as MySQL, Oracle, or SQL Server, including schema design, normalization, and optimization.
Strong understanding of data warehousing architecture, with experience in implementing and maintaining data lakes using tools like Snowflake, AWS Redshift, or Google BigQuery.
Expertise in schema development and data modeling, including designing and implementing efficient and scalable database schemas to support the GRCs data strategy.
In-depth knowledge of query optimization techniques, including index optimization, query tuning, and performance monitoring to ensure efficient data loading, retrieval, and analysis.
Ability to work closely with IT support partners to ensure proper configuration and operational stability of critical database environments, including performance monitoring, capacity planning, and troubleshooting.
Familiarity with ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes and tools, enabling seamless data integration between different systems and databases.
Proficient in writing complex SQL queries and stored procedures for data retrieval, manipulation, and analysis, ensuring data accuracy and integrity.
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to analyze and resolve database-related issues, including data inconsistencies, performance bottlenecks, and system failures.
