I: Job Summary

The Sr Automation Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, managing, and/or maintaining equipment which is used to monitor and control engineering systems, machinery, and processes. The Sr Automation Engineer is also responsible for the interface between the hardware and software development for the automation system.

 

II: Responsibilities

Technical Expertise

  • Possesses expertise in engineering practices and applies this knowledge and skills to perform a wide variety of standard and nonstandard activities
  • Demonstrated success in technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others, and independent thought
  • Represents discipline on internal teams, committees, and at technical conferences
  • Possesses strong knowledge of computer system validation and related practices, including governmental regulations. Developing broader skills and applies this knowledge and skills to perform a variety of standard activities 
  • Preparation of design packages and specification, functional specifications related to software and hardware RFPs, design review, vendor/contractor selection, constructability reviews, approval of submittals, and preparation and oversight of validation and regulatory submissions
  • Preparation of engineering standards, approval of submittals, and authoring PMs, SOPs, Commissioning Protocols, and conducting training for new equipment installations
  • Coordinates the efforts of engineering support groups and external resources such as vendors, consultants, and contractors
  • Provide process control engineering services for legacy systems and for capital projects focusing on capacity increase, process optimization, risk mitigation, and compliance improvements
  • Create and adhere to project budgets and schedules, performing work in accordance with internal SOPs and good Engineering Practices, and ensuring compliance with the following regulations: GAMP, cGMP, MIOSHA, EPA, DEQ, and all other applicable State and Federal codes
  • Author, review, and approve automation system lifecycle design documentation (user requirements, functional and design specifications, commissioning, and qualification protocols) 

 

Problem-Solving

  • Responsible for large projects of high complexity
  • Responsible for completion of highly complex or highly difficult NCEs, CAPAs, and Change Controls
  • Problems are varied, and complex requiring analysis/interpretation and are solved using knowledge/skills, precedents, and practices. These include but are not limited to process troubleshooting, operations support, root cause analysis, and risk assessment to document and accept risk
  • Exercises judgment within broadly defined practices and policies in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Activities address various aspects of engineering and related areas
  • Demonstrate strong leadership and management qualities when working within the department and other stakeholder groups that yields results
  • Responsible for demonstrating skills in requirements gathering, design, configuration, integration and implementation of process control solutions for the manufacturing industry including batch software, PLC / DCS systems, HMI packages, SCADA systems, Visual Basic and PC networking technology
  • Responsible for working well within teams and be effective in leading meetings with the customer, other project stakeholders, and external consultants during all phases of the project

 

Supervision

  • May determine methods and procedures on new complex assignments
  • May provide technical direction to other engineers

III: Education, Experience & Skills

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering discipline from an accredited university
  • Engineering degree in mechanical, chemical, IT, or electrical discipline

 

Experience & Skills 

  • Minimum of 8 years of control industry experience
  • Proven programming experience with either of the following industrial automation systems: Allen-Bradley PLCs or Emerson DeltaV DCS
  • Expert knowledge of engineering principles and concepts
  • Possesses strong knowledge of engineering and related practices, including governmental regulations – ISPE GAMP, EU Annex 11, CFR 210, 211, Part 11
  • Must have knowledge of process manufacturing field instrumentation, technology, and batch process manufacturing expertise in all the following project phases: Requirements documentation, detailed design generation, implementation, system integration, testing, and on-site startup
  • Strong communication and computer skills 
  • Reputation as emerging leader in field with sustained performance and accomplishment
  • Must be able to provide clear direction while motivating teams
  • Must lead by example through strong work ethics and high standards
  • Desire to continue to promote personal development 
  • Proficient with computer applications such as Microsoft Suite 
  • Possesses expertise in engineering practices and applies this knowledge and skills to perform a wide variety of standard and nonstandard activities
  • Demonstrated success in technical proficient, scientific creativity, collaboration with others, and independent thought
