What you will do

Lets do this. Lets change the world. In this newly created role, the Vice President of Obesity Development will lead the late clinical development strategy, planning and decision making for pipeline products with the targeted indications of weight management and diabetes, as well as other selected obesity related conditions (e.g. liver disease, sleep apnea etc.).

In addition to being a member of Global Development, this individual will be a member of the Obesity Leadership Team, comprised of cross-functional leaders that specifically focus on the discovery, development and delivery of all obesity products. Counterpart leaders in the Obesity Leadership Team include Research, Early Development, Medical Affairs and Commercial functions that advance the Obesity pipeline and champion and contribute to business development opportunities in the Obesity area.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the prioritization of staff engagement and development activities while actively pursuing diversity in thought as well as inclusion of people with different backgrounds within the TA.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic, scientific and people leadership for the Obesity development pipeline and marketed products as it relates to weight management and diabetes as well as selected other obesity related conditions (liver disease, sleep apnea, etc.).

  • Oversee late clinical programs within the Obesity disease area, helping define the portfolio vision and strategy and mobilizing the team to execute against it

  • Serve as a senior advisor or executive sponsor for functional, cross-functional and/or corporate initiatives

  • Critically evaluate business development opportunities

  • Evaluate the overall benefit/risk of assets

  • Provide clinical input into product/indication strategy

  • Establish and nurture key strategic partnerships including public-private and private-private

  • Chair related Technical Review Committees for the disease area, driving cross-functional advice and providing approval for the scientific design of clinical trials

  • Create and maintain highly motivated development teams through leadership, people management and coaching with a focus on career development

  • Ensures effective performance management of direct reports through comprehensive goal setting, regular performance reviews, as well as direct and timely feedback

  • Foster a culture that attracts and retains the best talent

  • Support staff diversity, inclusion and belonging

Basic Qualifications:

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school AND

  • Five years of industry or academic research AND

  • 8 years of direct managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MD, and/or PhD/PharmD, plus accredited residency in relevant sub-specialty, board certified or equivalent

  • Eight (8) or more years of clinical research experience within in the biopharmaceutical industry, and/or private practice, (including hospital based) basic science research combined with clinical teaching and patient care activities.

  • Highly skilled in leveraging diverse thoughts and perspectives in clinical strategy development

  • In-depth understanding of the scientific method and clinical applications based on medical, scientific, and practical rationale

  • In-depth understanding of and proven success in how to conceptualize, design, and conduct complex, global clinical trials

  • Medical knowledge in the relevant therapeutic area; obesity and/or diabetes experience required

  • Sound scientific and clinical judgment

  • Understanding of regulatory agency organization, guidelines, and practices and ability to negotiate with these groups

  • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practices (GCP), FDA regulations and guidelines, and applicable international regulatory requirements

  • Understanding of new drug commercialization and business practices

  • Understanding of resourcing and budgeting

  • Passionate and highly capable of mentoring and leading highly talented teams

  • Ability to effectively present ideas and document complex medical/clinical concepts in both written and oral communication

  • Demonstrated ability to organize and lead expert Clinical Research Advisory Panels

  • History of solving problems while exhibiting superior judgment and a balanced, realistic understanding of issues

The annual base salary range for this Vice President Role is $307,500-$512,500.
