In this vital role you will be responsible for leading Amgens General Medicine and Obesity therapeutic area business development efforts, including contributing to the overall therapeutic area strategy as well as identifying and evaluating external therapeutic assets for in-licensing, M&A, or partnerships and collaborations. This is a high impact role that is important to both the company and to patients by identifying and assessing innovative therapeutics that can advance Amgens pipeline and increase access to patients. This role requires robust knowledge of the science, development and regulatory paths, and commercial and regional pressures within the indication and therapeutic area.

The Executive Director will be a key member of Amgens Obesity leadership team and the General Medicine Therapeutic Area Group and will serve as the primary interface on related external innovation topics. The person in this role will develop and nurture a network of key industry and academic contacts to ensure robust communication of ideas, interests and information between the external community and internal groups. The role requires proactive efforts to lead the search and identification of opportunities through internal and external networking along with landscape and strategy reviews. The role includes leading the technical evaluations of opportunities by creating and managing cross-functional review teams, providing recommendations based on robust scientific and drug industry knowledge, and ensuring appropriate and efficient decision-making processes.

The Executive Director will work closely with the transaction lead to ensure successful reviews and business negotiations. They will be responsible for leading strategic discussions and presentations, collaborating closely with senior management, R&D, and Commercial to develop a set of priorities for sourcing the best external innovation agnostic to deal type (license, collaboration, M&A). The Executive Director will also be expected to successfully mentor any direct reports and present themselves as a thoughtful and respected professional to both internal colleagues and external parties. The role may also include the support of out-licensing activities. Travel will be required.

  • Contribute to and be a driver of the generation and modification of the therapeutic area strategy and represent BD as a core member of the Cardiometabolic and Obesity leadership groups

  • Identify, prioritize, and evaluate innovative technology opportunities from all external sources based on scientific and clinical knowledge as well as understanding of strategic fit

  • Proactively source opportunities via internal and external networking, attending scientific sessions and conferences, news, and other sources such as KOLs, Venture Capital groups, and industry leaders

  • Provide perspectives on external transactions

  • Responsible for generating and sharing Business Intelligence insights for the therapeutic area

  • Lead and manage external evaluations and diligence with cross-functional teams, including R&D, Commercial, CMC/manufacturing, Legal, IP, and others

  • Provide recommendations and guidance, and ensure robust and efficient decision-making processes for senior executives

  • Work creatively to lead therapeutic area decision making for both pipeline and external innovation including identifying tangential areas of potential interest, target product profiles for indications of interest, competitive landscapes, etc.

  • Work closely with others in Business Development (e.g., Transactions, Amgen Ventures etc.) to ensure internal alignment on opportunities and that appropriate diligence is conducted in order to provide feedback that informs deal structures and valuation

  • Ensure thorough record keeping

  • Reach out externally and internally to share Amgens Business Development vision and represent Amgen at conferences and panels

  • General Medicine therapeutic area includes: cardiometabolic, obesity, bone, and nephrology

Basic Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree & 6 years of business development OR

  • Masters degree & 10 years of business development OR

  • Bachelors degree & 12 years of business development AND

  • 6 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in scientific discipline related to cardiovascular and metabolism, with robust working knowledge in obesity therapeutic area

  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ability foresee and solve problems as well as prioritize and meet deadlines

  • Work independently while being a team player

  • Experience managing direct reports and ability to interface effectively with all-levels of staff across differing functional expertise

  • Create and build relationships with internal and external parties

  • Lead senior level cross functional teams work, manage large teams, and mentor individuals

The annual base salary range for this opportunity in the U.S. is $271,564 to $335,396.
