Job Details

ATCC is seeking an onsite Biologist in Gaithersburg, MD, to support product development in a fast paced environment to develop innovative bacteriology products, targeted to meet the needs of an international customer base of academic scientists, biopharmaceutical clients and contract research organizations.  The Biologist is responsible for conducting diverse experiments to assist in the studying of biological materials and processes. Under supervision, they conduct testing and studies to advance product development and research. The Biologist monitors laboratory supplies, equipment, and cleanliness. 

The Biologist role in Bacteriology R&D is a lab-based role responsible for managing the data acquisition of a wide range of bacteriology assays and techniques utilized in the scope of the program needs. These include standard bacteriology cultivation, molecular assays (DNA extraction, ddPCR, qPCR), bacteria quantitation (Live/Dead counting), and novel bacterial assays.

Responsibilities

  • Lab Duties: Perform a variety of experiments for the development of bacteriology products and generate application data by following standard operating procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and other controlled documents. Maintain laboratory safety, operations, equipment, and supplies.
  • Documentation: Assist in the preparation of research documentation, such as grants, regulatory submissions manuscripts, reports, summaries, publications, and presentations. Revise and develop SOPs and work instructions. Collect, analyze, and report data, ensuring meticulous documentation.
  • Continuous Learning and Problem-Solving: Work towards subject matter expertise of various organisms and techniques, and handle challenges in alignment with organizational policies.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field with 2-5 years of relevant experience or equivalent
  • In-depth knowledge and hands-on expertise in molecular biology, including but not limited to qPCR, ddPCR, DNA and RNA isolation, advanced molecular cloning techniques, molecular probe techniques, and sequence modifications.
  • Experience with bacteriology techniques for the growth, quantitation, and characterization of a broad range of bacteria is desired.
    Strong computer skills using Microsoft Office, statistical software (GraphPad Prism, JMP), and other scientific software (CLC Genomics).
