Head of Preclinical Development Gene Therapy
We are seeking a strong leader to advance preclinical development of Lilly’s growing portfolio of gene therapy and editing programs. The Head of Preclinical Development, Gene Therapy will play a key scientific leadership role in developing and executing translational research for gene therapies at Lilly. The successful candidate will be both independent and able to lead matrixed nonclinical teams, with the experience and motivation to succeed at the highest level and thrive in a highly dynamic environment.
Job Responsibilities:- Establish a unified Translational team for Lilly Gene Therapy and develop / implement needed infrastructure to support a growing portfolio spanning multiple therapeutic areas
- Manage / oversee study monitoring for NHP / large animal studies and for IND-enabling pharmacology and toxicology studies for gene therapy and gene editing programs
- Partner with delivery team (including surgeons and associated teams) to expand large animal surgery capabilities
- Oversee toxicology studies to support local delivery and CNS / systemic preclinical projects / programs
- Partner with capsid engineering, external innovation, and other platform teams to identify capsids / technologies that increase probability of compelling clinical data in early clinical development
- Partner with device teams and relevant SMEs for compatibility studies
- Drive support of nonclinical Regulatory documents / interactions, partnering with relevant SMEs and Regulatory
- Partner with discovery teams and contribute to cross-functional portfolio growth strategy discussions to ensure early-stage research is advanced in a manner that enables generation of data that inform clinical development
- Ph.D. or Masters degree in life sciences and 15+ years relevant experience, including at least 10 years in translational research
- 5+ years' experience with development of AAV gene therapy and/or nonviral gene editing programs is required
- Comprehensive experience with biochemical, cellular biology, and/or molecular biology; deep experience in translational sciences
- Experience leading and developing teams, and a track record of effective team management and professional development of scientists and managers who manage multiple projects at varying stages of development under time pressure
- Extensive knowledge of GLP regulations and reporting requirements
- High attention to detail
- Demonstrated excellent analytical, interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
- Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial yet highly disciplined environment
- Position Location: Lilly Institute for Genetic Medicine (Boston MA), or New York City.
- Lilly currently anticipates that the base salary for this position could range from between $219,750 to $353,100 and will depend, in part, on the successful candidate’s qualifications for the role, including education and experience. Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance). In addition, Lilly offers a comprehensive benefit program to eligible employees, including eligibility to participate in a company-sponsored 401(k); pension; vacation benefits; eligibility for medical, dental, vision and prescription drug benefits; flexible benefits (e.g., healthcare and/or dependent day care flexible spending accounts); life insurance and death benefits; certain time off and leave of absence benefits; and well-being benefits (e.g., employee assistance program, fitness benefits, and employee clubs and activities).Of course, the compensation described above is subject to change and could be higher or lower than the range described above.
