We are adding this position to our team to respond to competitive growth and increased complexity and volume across Lilly’s extraordinary IP assets.
This individual will provide legal administrative expertise by ensuring that key aspects of global patent application filing, prosecution, and maintenance processes are accomplished in an accurate, timely, and appropriate manner that will be consistent with international legal treaties and jurisdictional statutory requirements and Lilly’s global patent procurement policies and procedures. This position requires an understanding and awareness of the global patent landscape (United States, EP, PCT and National phase filings).
The position requires a dedication to data integrity, attention to detail, troubleshooting, problem-solving, strong reading comprehension and proofreading skills, confirmed prioritization, organization, and typing/writing/verbal communication skills. The ideal candidate would also have the ability to self-manage and establish/meet deadlines, as well as provide oversight for vendor-provided services. Applicants must demonstrate customer service orientation, strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and a productive demeanor. You must be able to work effectively under pressure and within deadlines while adapting to frequent changes in priorities.
Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Sr. Director of IP Operations responsibilities include:
Conduct quality checks on patent and trademark docket processing to identify errors and correct them to reduce the risk of a loss of rights.
Ensure the integrity of Lilly’s patent and trademark data, including official dates and numbers, as well as critical deadlines, are accurate to reduce risk of losing a right.
Handle the four-eye quality checks within the docketing system; resolve accordingly.
Develop a robust process of quality checks to ensure there are no loss of rights, detailing each process.
Work alongside outside renewals vendor to ensure patent and trademark renewals are maintained according to country laws.
Resolve data discrepancies to ensure accuracy of data, including reviewing weekly and monthly reports sent by renewals vendor.
Prepare and lead all formality documents related to effecting patent annuities and trademark renewals.
Monitor upcoming renewal deadlines and proactively connect with vendor to ensure timely payments.
Stay up to date on changes in intellectual property laws and regulations related to renewals.
Anticipate and research complex fact patterns, lead troubleshooting investigations, problem-solve, and produce reliable work product within own or across work groups.
Deep technical knowledge and demonstrated influence across IP industry rules and regulations; anticipate and assess potential impact of industry changes on departmental and business unit strategies, policies, and processes.
Demonstrated judgment in handling own priorities and seamless integration with team members and support team priorities.
Employ highly effective organization skills along with verbal and written interactions with legal colleagues, inventors, business clients, international law firms, vendors, and other external parties.
Independently engages other resources to complete responsibilities.
Basic Qualifications:
B.A. or B.S. degree or
High School diploma/GED with three years of relevant experience
Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to be employed in the United States. Lilly does not anticipate providing sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B or TN status) for this employment position
Preferred:
5+ years of experience as a patent and trademark docketer
3+ years of experience in managing patent annuities and trademark renewals.
Proficient and experienced with Outlook, Internet Explorer, MS Office programs, legal software, and docketing programs, specifically Anaqua.
Experience in the pharmaceutical or healthcare industry.
Experience working effectively in a fast-paced environment with challenging priorities is critical.
Excellent oral and written communication, facilitation, and project/stakeholder leadership skills.
Must project a professional demeanor, effectively represent the IP Operations team, exhibit sound judgment, and maintain confidentiality.
Lilly currently anticipates that the base salary for this position could range from between $57,500 to $127,600 and will depend, in part, on the successful candidate’s qualifications for the role, including education and experience. Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance). In addition, Lilly offers a comprehensive benefit program to eligible employees, including eligibility to participate in a company-sponsored 401(k); pension; vacation benefits; eligibility for medical, dental, vision and prescription drug benefits; flexible benefits (e.g., healthcare and/or dependent day care flexible spending accounts); life insurance and death benefits; certain time off and leave of absence benefits; and well-being benefits (e.g., employee assistance program, fitness benefits, and employee clubs and activities). Of course, the compensation described above is subject to change and could be higher or lower than the range described above.
