Schrödinger seeks a Principal Scientist I/II to join the Clinical Biomarkers team with expertise in discovery and development of phase appropriate biomarker and diagnostic assays to join our dynamic and multi-disciplinary Drug Discovery and Early Development team. This role will liaise with discovery and development project teams and functional area representatives focusing on biomarker discovery and feasibility assessment relevant to our clinical and regulatory strategies. The scientist will spend at least 50% of the time at the bench in our newly built clinical biomarker lab at Framingham, Massachusetts designing, developing and qualifying clinically applicable assays related to patient selection, target engagement, pharmacodynamic and mechanistic biomarkers.
Who will love this job:
- An experienced researcher with a proven track record of successfully developing and implementing biomarker assays using a wide breadth of low and medium throughput assays and methodologies
- An independent scientist with a keen eye for detail who’s worked on companion or complementary diagnostics
- An energetic team player who enjoys working collaboratively in a fast paced environment across disciplines and is innately curious
What you’ll do:
- Execute on clinical biomarker plans, including:
- Partner with discovery biology scientists including computational biology team members to bridge preclinical PK/PD assay methodologies and read-outs to an executable clinical PK/PD assay, and develop pharmacogenomic hypotheses to guide indication selection and patient stratification in a rational and testable manner
- Contribute to creation of regulatory and clinical documents including but not limited to Pre-IND and IND non-clinical pharmacology sections for lead clinical candidates, clinical protocols, investigator brochures, posters, publications
- Develop/transferassays for clinical biomarkers to selected vendors and oversee assay development, fit-for-purpose validation, and assay report generation
- Provide support in the oversight of bioanalytical assay scientist(s) at CROs
- Partner with clinical operations scientists, clinical vendors, and biorepository to maintain sample chain of custody
What you should have:
- Experience in the biological or medical sciences (with a focus on oncology or immunology) - at least 10 years with an advanced degree (PhD, MD, or equivalent), 12 years with a Master’s degree or fifteen with a Bachelor’s degree; at least 3 years must be spent in an industry setting
- Strong experimental background and experience in hypothesis-driven biological/translational research with demonstrated ability to execute well-designed experiments in vitro/ex vivo using primary human cells and tissues
- Familiarity with common clinical biomarker assay platforms, including spatial genomic, IHC, ELISA/MSD, other substrate-binding or target engagement methods and cell-based ex vivo assays
- Experience developing clinical flow cytometry-based assays under GLP/GCLP/CLIA-like settings is a must
- Understanding of the requirements for fit-for-purpose, GLP-compliant, or CLIA-compliant assay validation, and experience applying these standards appropriately based on development stage and biomarker status in the program is preferred
- Basic understanding of bioinformatics, NGS algorithms and methodology as it applies to clinical data is a plus
