In the field of rare diseases, Ipsen takes a patient-focused approach to improving the lives of people affected by rare disorders and develops high-quality, innovative treatments that address unmet needs. Our goal is to support patients with drugs, services and solutions across the entire continuum of care, from diagnosis to treatment follow-up.
Position Summary:
The primary responsibility of the Rare Disease Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is to act as a liaison with nationwide and regional thought leaders (TLs) to align interests, discuss research and medical information, and to facilitate both clinical trial efforts of Ipsen and Investigator-sponsored studies. The MSL position is a field-based member of the U.S. Medical Affairs team. This individual’s clinical practice insights and basic science knowledge will be utilized to deliver non-promotional scientific, educational, and research concerning cutting edge data and technical/pragmatic education activities to appropriate internal and external stakeholders.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the following:
- Identify, develop, and manage peer-to-peer relationships with regional and national medical experts aligned within therapeutic areas of interest, and consistent with the strategy and objectives of Medical Affairs.
- Engage in ongoing scientific exchange about the science and clinical application of Rare Disease portfolio to external stakeholders, obtain and share insights about current practice, treatment landscapes, and emerging clinical and scientific data.
- Proactively identify potential research sites and assist as needed in facilitation of company sponsored clinical trials.
- Identify and assist, as needed, in initiation and closure of investigator-sponsored clinical trials (ISS).
- Partner with Medical Affairs and Medical Information services to ensure accurate delivery of medical and scientific information, as needed.
- Support the development of annual medical affairs plans in rare disease, as appropriate, and in collaboration with the internal medical team.
- Lead the development and implementation of a regional territory plan.
- Contribute to the identification of unmet medical needs in rare disease.
- Develop and maintain scientific, clinical, and therapeutic expertise in rare disease.
- Provide appropriate scientific, clinical, and educational expertise for internal and external customers.
- Identify opportunities and/or support medical publications as needed (abstracts, manuscripts, etc.).
- Collaborate and participate in Speaker Training initiatives.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of scientific training to commercial colleagues.
- Lead/participate on special project teams as necessary.
- Coordinate scientific activities with medical affairs, clinical development, and global franchise groups, as needed
- Represent the company at specific continuing medical educational events, programs, medical congresses, and scientific conventions.
- Differentiate Ipsen as the valued scientific partner of choice through innovative initiatives, coordinated strategy, scientific communication, and patient centricity.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
Ensure a close working relationship with all US cross-functional Rare Disease team members, including field-based counterparts and home office-based team members, legal, regulatory, market access individuals, medical/clinical operations.
Support cross-functional teams to ensure operations are patient-focused, including rapidly responding to internal and external requests to discuss specific situations and challenges and provide medical affairs support to all stakeholders.
Education, Experience, Skills, and Knowledge:
The ideal candidate will offer:
- Previous holding of an MSL or related role with at least 3-5 years’ experience is required.
- Advanced scientific, healthcare or medical degree (PharmD, PhD, MD) is required.
- Rare Disease experience strongly preferred
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain credible and scientific relationships with top experts in the field.
- Previous experience with product launches and life cycle management.
- Highly developed interpersonal skills and the ability to function on a cross-functional team.
- Knowledge of PhRMA, OIG, and other guidelines relating to compliant medical communications.
- Demonstrated expertise in ability to synthesize and communicate medical information clearly.
- Excellent planning, presentation, written and presentation communication skills.
- Ability to travel ~ 60-80% (based on the size of respective geography).
